Keywords - a Beginners Guide
by Chris FarrellThis is an oversimplification, but it may help your mindset.

Keyword research is done once you know your niche.
It is extremely important if you want to create a website to have good keyword research.
First things first...
QUESTION
What is a keyword?
ANSWER
A keyword is the phrase that we type into Google (or any search engine) when looking for something in particular.
Why are keywords so important?
To understand why keywords are so important -- you have to understand how the web works.
Let's use Google as an example.
Every day - millions of us search on Google for information. And Google keeps a record of every piece of information that is requested. (big brother really is watching us...)
Whatever you type into Google's search window - is known as a keyword.
(Incidentally - even if you type in a few actual words - they are counted as ONE keyword. For example - 'improve my fishing' is three actual words - but it is counted as ONE keyword)
(For that reason I like to use the term keyphrase - but keyword is the universally used expression).
Now - Google's spiders and robots trawl the web all the time 'reading' every website.
And Google give a higher ranking to websites that are full of the most searched keywords.
Therefore - the better use of popular keywords you have -- the higher in Google's listing you will appear -- resulting in more exposure of your site.
To put it simply - if you can learn the words your customers (or future customers) are using to search - you can exploit this information by using it to your advantage.
Once you have a list of strong keywords -- all you have to do is make sure that you use these keywords on your web page(s) or in your articles.
Sprinkling your web page/articles with 'search engine rich' keywords will make you a favorite amongst the search engines. And they reward your work with higher listings.
To sum up -- getting keywords right -- can generate a HUGE amount of FREE traffic to your site (this is known in the business as SEO -- Search Engine Optimization).
And not only that - but the traffic is TARGETED.
Free, targeted traffic -- it doesn't get any better than that.
Final Words!
For internet users to be able to reach your website, you should use proper keywords and phrases so that it'll be a lot easier for internet surfers to stumble upon your website while using the search engine on the internet.
Your website should be brimming with appropriate keywords and phrases, to help promote its content.
